She’ll be apples with a cherry on top for the Perennial Horticulture Centre at national conference
Six staff from TIAR’s Perennial Horticulture Centre recently attended the National Apple, Pear and Cherry Conference in Adelaide (31 July to 5 August).
Dugald Close gave a presentation on our work as national lead agency on cherry research. Penny Measham gave a paper on ‘Cell division and cell expansion: what underpins fruit size and can we manage it?’ and Penny Domeney led a technical session on Integrated Pest Management at the Horticulture Expo. Penny Domeney was also responsible for organising our spectacular booth at the conference (pictured). Also, influential NZ consultant Earncy Weaver gave high praise to our cherry research during his key note presentation.
The Centre’s work on the national apple and pear orchard productivity (‘PIPS’) program was highlighted by Horticulture Australia Industry Services Manager as the model they would like to see all their research funds invested into. PIPS project leaders Drs Stuart Tustin and Brent Clothier from Plant and Food Research NZ gave very well received presentations on the PIPS program commended at the conference.
Overall the conference was a very enjoyable and stimulating experience for our team.
