Poster quality not skin deep

Angla won the competition at the International Cool Climate Wine Symposium, held at the Grand Chancellor Hotel in Hobart, 31 January to 4 February 2012.

Angela's poster was titled "Is Pinot quality skin deep?", with coauthors Richard Smart (Smart Viticulture, UK) and TIA's own Bob Dambergs.

"In Pinot Noir wines, skin tannins are considered more desirable than seed tannins, but with normal wine-making methods, seeds are included to compensate for the low concentrations of tannin in the skin.

"Because pigment and tannin are likely to be released more readily from ruptured skin cells, we investigated the consequences of decreasing the skin particle size in the presence or absence of seeds using submerged cap micro-fermentation."

Well done Angela, Richard and Bob. We raise a glass to your collective success.
