| Mitigation and Adaptation in the Australian Dairy Industry (MAADI) | MAADI involves on-farm demonstration and validation of climate change mitigation and adaptation options, strategies, and technologies across the dairy supply chain. This part of the project will be focus on validating and modelling alternate forages at both a component and farm systems level | Richard Rawnsley | Melbourne University via DAFF Climate Change research program | 30/9/2012 |
| Sustainable Farm Nutrient Management in King Island Dairy Farms | The project will target representative farms in the Sea Elephant and other catchments. On these farms selected paddocks will have soil tests for pH, phosphate, potassium and sulphur. Farmer information on production and management will be used to develop nutrient budgets with the Target 10 Nutrimatch program. Farmers environmental management will be assessed using DairySat (Self Assessment Tool) and a set of prioritised commitments for changes in management practice drawn up. | Bill Cotching | King Island NRM Group | 31/3/2012 |

Support for automatic milking systems and automatic rotary milking implementation in the Australian dairy industry |
The dairy industry is rapidly incorporating more technology on farm, especially AMS (automatic milking systems - robotics). This project will support TIA Dairy Centre staff to undertake intensive skill development in AMS technology and implications for implementation on farm. The results of this project will lead to more effective support systems being developed for farmers as new AMR (automatic milking rotary) technology is adopted on dairy farms over the next decade. |

Improving utilization of red wheat |
To confirm or deny field observations from dairy consultants that dairy cows in Tasmania show a dramatic decline in milk yield when switched from a standard hard white to a red wheat based diet. If milk yield depression is confirmed, to investigate the mechanisms behind it, such as differences in nutritive value component analyses that lead to the development of a sub-acute ruminal acidosis and other production and metabolic indices in Holstein Friesian dairy cows. If milk depression is confirmed, to demonstrate that the risk of depressing milk yield is overcome by best scientific practice reformulation of and adjustment onto the red compared to white wheat based diets. |

Adaption and mitigation to cope with climate change |
This project will identify barriers to adoption and the issues linked with them of dairy farmers in Tasmania, to climate change adaptation and mitigation. Once the issues have been identified, the project will assist farmers to develop strategies to overcome the barriers and cope with climate change |
